Schoolies 2026: Australian Government Urges Young Travellers to Celebrate Safely
Share
Schoolies should be about celebrating the end of an era, making memories with friends and enjoying a little freedom. But for thousands of Australian school leavers heading overseas, staying safe deserves a spot on the itinerary.
On 9 October 2026, the Australian Government released a new safety initiative encouraging young Australians to prepare for the risks associated with celebrating overseas, including drink spiking, methanol poisoning and unfamiliar local laws.
A New Focus on Safer Celebrations
As part of the initiative, Smartraveller has launched TravelSmarts, an interactive learning tool designed to help young Australians navigate real-world travel situations.
Working alongside organisations including DrinkWise and Red Frogs, the government is also providing practical safety advice, educational resources and support for young travellers.
The message is simple: have an incredible time, but know how to look after yourself and your mates.
Drink Spiking Remains an Important Safety Concern
Drink spiking is one of the risks specifically highlighted in the government’s announcement.
Whether you’re celebrating in Bali, Thailand, Fiji or closer to home, a few simple precautions can help reduce your risk.
- Keep your drink with you and avoid accepting drinks from strangers unless you see them prepared.
- Consider using a drink cover to help prevent unwanted substances being added.
- Carry drink spiking detection strips for an additional precaution, remembering that no test detects every substance.
- Look out for your friends and agree on a plan to get home safely.
- If something feels wrong, seek help immediately.
How Safer Sips Can Help
At Safer Sips, we believe celebrating shouldn’t mean constantly worrying about your safety.
Our range of drink safety products, including NightCap reusable drink covers, StopTopps disposable drink covers and CYD drink spiking detection strips, is designed to give you practical options for protecting your drinks.
No product can guarantee your safety, but having a few extra precautions in place can help you feel more prepared.
Celebrate Big. Look After Each Other.
Schoolies is a milestone worth celebrating. A little preparation can go a long way towards making those memories good ones.
